Why You Want Investment Management

There are a wide range of motivations for why clients hire an adviser to manage their investments. For some, it can feel intimiating to even try to look at what is going on. For others, it's about wanting the peace of mind that an expert is working alongside them, mapping out a plan that aligns with their life and financial goals. Here are some common objectives that you may have when it comes to hiring us to manage your investments.

  • You've come to a point where you realize that you don't know what you're doing with your investments and you need someone you can trust to act in your best interests.
  • You don't know what you're looking at with your investments, but you want to learn more, and you want someone who will actually teach you about what's going on, not just tell you what to do.
  • You never hear from your financial adviser, or have trouble getting a hold of them when you need to talk to them.
  • You find investing intimidating, or at least the idea of making a big decision like that without expert input, and you don't want to make a bad decision that could hurt you in the long run.
  • You've worked hard to build up what you currently have and you want to minimize the chances of losing what you have.
  • You're genuinely curious about how all this works and want to learn more and be better informed as an investor, but you generally mistrust financial advisers, or maybe you've had a really bad interaction with one in the past.
  • You want peace of mind knowing that someone is watching over what's happening in your accounts, freeing your emotional and mental bandwidth to do and enjoy other things in life.
  • You want to make sure you're on track with your investment savings. You want to make sure you have enough saved for the future.

Our Approach and Philosophy

Prudent investment management is not just about earning a certain level of returns. It is about managing risk. It is about making sure that what you're invested in makes sense for who you are, where you're at in life, and that no matter what the market does, that you can maintain the approach in good times and bad. This helps avoid costly mistakes along the way, while at the same time being aligned with both your current and future needs. Here is how we accomplish this:

  • We will start with an interview-style conversation to learn more about your lifestyle, what your goals are, and any concerns you may have. We'll also examine in a couple of different ways how you might react in different situations that can come up in the market. This establishes what's called your risk tolerance, or what you're able to comfortably withstand without feeling like you need to take an action that could adversely affect your investment performance.
  • With that information, we'll be able to build a portfolio strategy that is designed for you, that we believe balances your objectives and lifestyle with your risk tolerance. We'll review that plan with you, explaining how the strategy works, and make sure you feel comfortable with our approach before moving forward. Assuming you approve of what we've built for you, we'll begin the process of opening accounts with our custodial partner TD Ameritrade and get started on your new plan.
  • On a quarterly basis, we'll have a meeting to check-in and keep you informed about how your investments are doing, what's happening in the market, and keeping tabs on how you are doing along with any changes in your life and circumstances. Knowing our clients is a top priority in being able to make sure that our work consistently reflects what your needs and goals are, and let's face it - life throws us a curve ball from time to time. Apart from our quarterly meetings, you can check on your accounts 24/7 through the AdvisorClient website and AdvisorClient mobile app.

You are different from every other client we work with. You have a unique story, with your own goals and aspirations and dreams and challenges. When you have questions, when you want to talk to your adviser, our availability is a top priority. We don't want you to ever feel like you have to chase us down. We are here working for you. We encourage questions and engagement, because we want you to know more about what you are invested in. It makes you a better investor, which frankly also makes you a better client for us.
